How much RAM do you need?

Memory keeps your apps and games responsive. Here's how much capacity — and how much speed — to choose.

How much RAM do you need?

Memory (RAM) holds the data your active apps and games are using. Too little forces the system to fall back to slow storage and stutter; enough keeps everything responsive. Capacity matters most, with speed a useful secondary factor.

How much capacity

  • 8 GB: bare minimum for light and office use; tight for modern gaming.
  • 16 GB: the comfortable default for gaming and everyday multitasking.
  • 32 GB: headroom for heavy multitasking, content creation, and demanding games.
  • 64 GB and up: for professional video, 3D, large datasets, and virtual machines.

Speed, kits, and compatibility

Buy memory as a matched kit (for example 2×16 GB) so it runs in dual channel, which is noticeably faster than a single stick of the same size. Faster memory helps some CPUs and games, but capacity comes first. The memory generation (such as DDR5) must match what your motherboard and CPU support — BuildBox checks this for you.

Is 16 GB enough for gaming?

For most games today, yes. If you also stream, keep many browser tabs open, or create content, 32 GB gives useful headroom.

One stick or two?

Two matched sticks enable dual-channel memory, which is faster than a single stick of the same total size. Prefer a kit.

Does faster RAM matter?

It helps some CPUs and games modestly, but get the right capacity and generation first, then consider speed.
