Kioxia BG5 is a line of client NVMe SSD drives designed for ultraportable laptops, 2-in-1 devices, compact PCs, embedded systems, and boot drives in environments where small form factor and energy efficiency are critical. The Kioxia BG5 is available in M.2 2230-S2 and M.2 2280-S2 form factors, with both variants designed as single-sided modules for easy installation in thin chassis. The line offers capacities of 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1024 GB and uses the PCIe 4.0 NVMe 1.4 interface with a maximum interface speed of 64 GT/s for PCIe Gen4 x4. The drives employ Kioxia's 112-layer BiCS FLASH 3D TLC NAND memory, and the Host Memory Buffer technology allows use of a portion of the system's RAM for operation without a dedicated DRAM cache on the SSD. The Kioxia BG5's maximum sequential read speed reaches 3500 MB/s and write speed up to 2900 MB/s in the higher configuration, with random read performance of 500K IOPS and random write of 450K IOPS. Active power consumption is rated at 4.3 W, and in L1.2 mode approximately 3 mW, which is particularly important for laptops. Certain Kioxia BG5 variants offer an SED version with TCG Opal 2.01 support. The line is primarily designed as an OEM solution for compact systems requiring PCIe 4.0, small form factor, and reliable operation in constrained spaces.
